I am seeking an easy to learn platform that students can develop immersive virtual physics experiments on. Openspace3D has been proposed but the object physics seems to be limited to contact forces. I'd like to include effects like electric charge attraction/repulsion as well as magnetic forces on moving electric charges.
Are there any examples of customized physics? Any suggestions on where to start? Is this task too hard for a simple project?

Hello and welcome!
OpenSpace3D use the "Newton dynamics" physics engine with only some parts implemented.
In next OS3D version I had a plugit to generate impulse forces in a radius (for explosions, magnetic field, wind effect ...)
For now in the current online version you have access to :
- physics contacts (friction, bounce...) using the physic contact plugIT
- physics forces (impulse, velocity, forces, gravity ...) using the physic tool plugIT
- physics joints
- physic ray to trigger a event when a physic body enter the ray
- Buoyancy simulation
